Irma reached Marion County overnight on 10 September 2017 as a tropical storm. The National Weather Service post-storm report for the county reads like a list of street names: trees and power lines down about 10 miles southwest of Santos at 1 AM, a tree across 14th Street in Ocala, trees and lines blocking the road at SE 50th Terrace and SE 21st Street, with reports continuing through the pre-dawn hours. The county saw widespread tree and power line damage from tropical storm force winds.
Most of what got written about afterward was the wind. The part that mattered for anyone on a septic system was the water: 7.30 inches in 24 hours on 9 September at a gauge about 5 miles east-northeast of Ocala, arriving in advance of Irma's heavy rainfall band.
Why the trouble arrives after the storm, not during it
A septic drain field does one job. It takes the liquid leaving your tank and lets it soak away into the soil. That works because there is dry soil underneath with room to accept water. It stops working when there is not.
Rain that heavy does not run off and vanish. It soaks down and pushes the water table up, and the water table keeps rising for days after the sky clears, then falls slowly. So a field that handled the storm fine can saturate a week later as that groundwater arrives. There is nowhere for effluent to go, and it backs up toward the house.
That is why the calls come in a fortnight after everyone else has moved on. One Ocala homeowner was still dealing with standing water inside her home more than two weeks after Irma. Local reporting at the time described it plainly: the water was"a combination of the retention pond and her septic tank that backed up."Two systems, both full, meeting in the same house.
What to do first, and the one thing not to do
Cut water use immediately and hard. No laundry, no dishwasher, short showers. Every gallon that goes down the drain has to go somewhere, and during saturation there is nowhere for it. Reducing input is the only lever you control.
The thing not to do is pump the tank as a first reflex. It feels like the obvious move and it is often the wrong one. When groundwater is high, an emptied tank becomes a buoyant object in wet ground. It can float, shift, or crack, and inlet and outlet pipes break when it moves. A temporary saturation problem becomes a tank replacement. If the ground is wet, call and describe the conditions before anyone pumps.
What this means for the next one
Marion County is inland, which spares it storm surge but not rainfall. A tropical system that stalls, or an ordinary summer afternoon that drops several inches in an hour, produces the same saturation. The pattern repeats: heavy rain, a quiet week, then a slow toilet and a wet spot over the drain field.
If your system already runs slow in ordinary weather, it has less margin than you think. That is the time to have the field looked at, when the ground is dry and the work is planned rather than urgent.
